Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has slammed FIFA for still providing few slots for African nations at World Cups.

FIFA currently accommodates only five African nations at World Cups and Broos does not think that is fair.

Bafana Bafana lead their group

Under Broos’ tutelage thus far, Bafana Bafana currently top their group for the 2022 Qatar World Cup. Leading the likes of Ghana, Ethiopia and neighbours Zimbabwe with 10 points. Ghana are currently hot on their trail however, with nine. Bafana Bafana now have just two more games at home against Zimbabwe and away to Ghana before concluding what could be just the first part of a tricky qualification campaign.

Winning the group won’t be enough

Topping the group alone is not going to be enough to earn Bafana Bafana World Cup qualification, however. Should they emerge victorious in their group, Broos’ men will then participate in a play-off with another country that top their group, with the winner of that home and away play-off then determining which of the two nations gets one of the five African spots for the showpiece next year.

Quizzed on that qualification format for African countries, and their World Cup quota being right   Broos did not mince his words.

Broos on African teams World Cup qualification spots

“Not at all, “I know it, because I have already been with Cameroon (Broos won the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations with the Indomitable Lions, but failed to qualify them for the 2018 Fifa World Cup finals). In the qualifiers in Africa, you have 40 countries to vie for ten first places (in the group stages). Then there is another round, and two games, and only five countries go to Qatar.” He said to The Citizen

Broos then lamented that African countries are faced with a far trickier path to the World Cup than their European counterparts.

“It is not fair, it is easier for good teams in Europe to qualify for the World Cup than (good teams) in Africa. In Africa you have Ghana, Cameroon, Nigeria, Algeria, Senegal, Morocco, Tunisia and Egypt. You already have eight good teams there! I hope for 2026 this will change … it is a pity they have waited so long to do that, because Africa deserve more teams.” Broos concluded.
