Bafana Bafana are away in Rabat to face Morocco in their opening Africa Cup of Nations qualifier of Group K on Thursday night.

Hugo Broos’ men go into this encounter as the underdogs given Morocco’s experienced squad which the majority of them play in Europe.
With only three nations in Group K after Zimbabwe’s expulsion, Bafana Bafana will definitely fancy their chances of qualifying for the finals this time around.

Liberia are the third nation in Group K but the fact that they are ranked way below both Morocco and South Africa by FIFA makes them the underdogs.
Now, Bafana Bafana’s first step towards qualifying for the 2023 AFCON finals is to get a result away to Morocco in order to build on it going forward.

But it’s not going to be easy as Bafana Bafana have not beaten Morocco since 2002 when both sides met at the AFCON finals.

Bafana Bafana and Morocco have met seven times across all competitions with the first match coming in at the 1998 AFCON games in Burkina Faso.

Bafana Bafana have won two of the seven matches while they also lost twice to Morocco with the other three matches ending in draws.
It is also worth noting that Bafana Bafana’s last win over Morocco came in 2002, meaning it has been 20 years since the country beat the Atlas Lions.

During that 20-year period, Bafana Bafana managed just three draws while suffering two defeats against Morocco – technically, one of the defeats was a draw as the Atlas Lions needed penalties to beat South Africa in the LG Cup in September 2002.
