Recently, Egyptian giants Al Ahly confirmed that Percy Tau had suffered a thigh injury in training and had been ruled out of action for several weeks.

The injury couldn’t have come at a worse time for Tau who is under pressure to retain his place in the Al Ahly squad.

Tau started the 2021/22 Egyptian Premier League season off like a house on fire, scoring five goals in the first six matches of the season. However, he hasn’t found the back of the net since 25 November 2021 – more than seven months ago!

Last month, it was reported by Soccer Laduma that Al Ahly could release Tau, apparently due to concerns over so-called “chronic injuries”.

It may have been Tau’s sixth injury issue since joining Al Ahly, but according to well-placed sources in Egypt, the Red Eagles are willing to continue backing the talented playmaker.

“Percy Tau is continuing and will not leave while he is in the final stage of his rehabilitation program,” a source told Yallakora. “Percy Tau is a very good material and does not suffer from a chronic injury, as some say, and he suffered a natural injury like any player.

“Tau was subjected to difficult pressures, but his performance will improve greatly with the new Portuguese coach, Ricardo Soares.

“There are no offers for Tau, and the Portuguese coach is waiting for the completion of his recovery programme so that he has a role with the team and sees him on the field before judging him, although he is committed to staying according to what he saw earlier.”

The departure of coach Pitso Mosimane was always expected to place a spotlight on the future of Percy Tau

Overall, Tau has scored eight goals and provided six assists in 28 matches across all competitions since signing from Premier League side Brighton & Hove Albion.

There have been growing calls for Tau to be sold with experts suggesting he isn’t ‘Al Ahly standard’.

With Tau’s long-time coach Pitso Mosimane now no longer in charge at Al Ahly, time will tell whether Tau can find more success in Egypt.
