The South African Football Association (SAFA) is planning on appointing a local coach to fill the vacant Bafana Bafana coaching position.

Bafana Bafana are currently without a coach after parting ways with Molefi Ntseki after he failed to lead the team to next year’s delayed Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals in Cameroon when the team lost 2-0 in Sudan in their final group match when all they required was a draw.

SAFA are in a rush to fill the vacancy with the national team due to kick off their qualifying campaign for the 2022 Soccer World Cup in early June away from home against neighbours Zimbabwe.

Bafana Bafana have also been grouped with Ghana and Ethiopia with just the winner of the group progressing to the next stage.

AmaZulu coach Benni McCarthy and former Maritzburg United coach Eric Tinkler have been linked with the job.

According to the Kickoff website, a source close to SAFA confirmed that a shortlist will be finalised by Monday, 12 April before announcing the new head coach at the end of the month – which is 21 days away.

That would leave the new coach with around five weeks for the first all-important 2022 World Cup qualifier in Zimbabwe.

With SAFA looking local, that rules out former SA national coach, Portugal’s Carlos Queiroz, returning for a second stint at the helm.
