Mokotjo had joined the American club as a free agent following his release from now English Premier League side Brentford

Mokotjo spent three years at the club previously

Mokotjo had signed for Brentford after playing in the Dutch Eredevisie for FC Twente. The midfielder spent all three years at the club, becoming a key and senior figure in its set up during his time there. He was rumoured to have joined the club in a club transfer record at the time of €1.5 million.

After proving himself to be a mainstay at the club, Mokotjo was eventually named the captain of FC Twente when Chilean Felipe Gutiérrez left the club at the beginning of the 2016-17 season. That would then also prove to be the last season he would play at the club, leaving the team and the Dutch league having made all of 105 appearances for them in total.

He is set for an opportunity to impress FC Twente again

Now according to the latest reports in the Netherlands, Mokotjo is set to return to FC Twente and training with the club, in an effort to win a contract with his former team. Speaking to Tubantia the clubs technical director Jan Streuer confirmed that the former Supersport United player will be at the club next week to kick start the process.

“Maybe it will be one hundred percent, and maybe not. We are in no rush because he has no contract. We’re going to take a look at it calmly, That remains to be seen. Mokotjo is a good player, and we will now see how fit he is,” said Streuer.

Could a move to a top league revive his Bafana Bafana chances?

Mokotjo is clearly held in high regards by the club having left a good impression at FC Twente and its fans. Still only 30, it would be a dream return for the player who didn’t quite have the best of times at Cincinnati and a good run in the Eredevisie could even propel him back into the Bafana Bafana fold, should he end up signing.
