Pitso Mosimane to Zamalek? It could have happened!

Zamalek president Mortada Mansour says he could have brought Al Ahly coach Pitso Mosimane to the Cairo club.

Mosimane has enjoyed great success during his time with Al Ahly, having lifted five trophies, while recently leading the team to a bronze medal at the Club World Cup.

Mosimane is reported to have received a contract offer around R2.5m-a-month to remain with the Egypt club, with plenty of debate having centred around the negotiations and whether a new agreement would be agreed upon by both parties.

In a wide-ranging interview for the On The Whistle Podcast, Mosimane recently “talked about renewing his contract, potentially coaching in the MLS, his reservations around the African Super League, and the big Champions League game coming up against his former team Mamelodi Sundowns”.

Interestingly, in a statement on the AlHadath TV channel, Mansour has now revealed that he had the opportunity to snatch Mosimane away from Ahly, but chose not to pursue it.

“If I wanted to bring Mosimane to Zamalek I could have done it, but I will not do that out of respect for Al Ahly fans,” Mortada said.

“A number of Al Ahly players wanted to join Zamalek but I refused, and when I signed Abdallah El-Said, his contract with Al Ahly was about to expire.”

Recently, club legend-turned pundit Ahmed Shobier has suggested it’s now up to Mosimane to decide on whether or not to accept a new offer tabled by the club.

“Al Ahly made Mosimane a good deal, I believe that it’s now up to him. He previously said that he wants to keep the position,” Shobeir said on On-Time Sports.

“I think it’s true that Mosimane wants to stay in Al Ahly, but the negotiations are still ongoing between the club and his agent. Al Ahly’s offer is between $160,000 and $165,000 (around R2.5 million) with a three-month termination clause.”

Mosimane’s agent Moira Thlagale, who is also his wife, recently confirmed she had headed to Cairo, which has added fuel to speculation that the popular coach could finally conclude negotiations.

Mosimane has repeatedly made his position clear amid reports that contract negotiations between the parties would only be concluded at the conclusion of tournament in the UAE.

“…My dream is to stay for several years with Al Ahly and to be a legend, like Manuel José, who won four CAF Champions League titles during seven years,” Mosimane said in his pre-match press conference, as per the club’s website.

“I hope to stay here for seven years. This is a hard thing to do, because Al Ahly is a great club and I always do my best to meet Al Ahly’s high expectations.”
