AFCON 2021: South African officials to handle final

CAF has confirmed that top SA referee Victor Gomes will be the man in the middle in the final of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has confirmed that top South African referee Victor Gomes will be the man in the middle in the final of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Gomes’ compatriot Zakhele Siwela will be one of the assistants along with Lesotho’s Souru Phatsoane.

The DRC’s Olivier Safari Kabene will be on fourth-official duty.

Gomes will become the first South African to referee an AFCON final.

The 2021 AFCON final with feature Senegal v Egypt

The final, set for Sunday, 6 February, will take place between Africa’s top-ranked nation, Senegal, and seven-time champions Egypt.

Egypt, led by Liverpool’s superstar Mohamed Salah, are looking to win their eighth AFCON title, but their first since 2010 in Angola.

Meanwhile, Senegal, who have another Liverpool striker in the form of Sadio Mane in their line-up, will be looking for their maiden AFCON success.

Kick-off at the Olembe Stadium in Yaounde is scheduled for 21:00 SA time.
