With every great sporting tournament comes a great opening ceremony. The stage is all set for the footballing part at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations… and it’s set for the opening ceremony, too.

While few things will ever top the giant dung beetle South Africa wheeled out for the 2010 Soccer World Cup opening ceremony, it’s all very worth a watch.
2019 Afcon opening ceremony performers
Femi Kuti of Nigeria, Dobet Gnahoré of Ivory and Hakim of Egypt have been confirmed as the headline acts for Friday night’s opening jamboree.
Kuti, the Afrobeat singer with four Grammy nominations to his name — will be performing the English version of the tournament’s official song. Kuti also performed at the 2010 opening ceremony, but there’s no confirmation whether the beetle will also make a reappearance.
He will be joined by Grammy-winning Gnahoré. The Afrobeat star won her first Grammy in 2010 for Best Urban/Alternative Performance.
Egypt’s Hakim rounds off the trio of headline acts. Hakim is a folk singer who has performed at a number of big events, including the Nobel Prize ceremony in Oslo in 2006.
Opening ceremony start time
The festivities will begin at 20:30 (SAST) with the opening match between Egypt and Zimbabwe kicking off at 22:00 SAST.
