Afcon 2019 goals: Troost-Ekong own goal puts Algeria ahead vs Nigeria

William Troost-Ekong’s own goal put Algeria 1-0 up against Nigeria 39 minutes into Sunday’s second Africa Cup of Nations semi-final, held at the Cairo International Stadium.

Riyad Mahrez initiated the opener by bursting down Algeria’s right flank. The cross in from there deflected off Jamilu Collins and then diverted into Daniel Akpeyi’s net off Troost-Ekong.

It was an unfortunate goal for the Super Eagles to concede, but they have been on the back foot so far and their luck had to run out at some point.

Nigeria kept the same starting XI which beat South Africa 2-1. Mehdi Zeffane was the only new face in the Algeria lineup after their penalty shootout triumph over Ivory Coast, replacing Youcef Atal at right-back.

The Desert Foxes dominated the early stages of the game but were unable to capitalise. Eventually, the villain for Nigeria proved to be their very own hero who scored the winner against Bafana Bafana.
