South African tennis professional Lloyd Harris moved up three places to a career-high 82nd in the latest ATP men’s singles rankings released on Monday.

The 22-year-old has been plotting a steady course up the rankings since breaking into the top-100 for the first time in February of this year.

SA’s top-ranked player, Kevin Anderson remained 11th in the rankings. Anderson dropped out of the top ten after taking an extended break from the game ahead of Wimbledon. The South African number one looked rusty at the year’s third Grand Slam and would ultimately lose his second round match to Argentine Guido Pella.

Harris bowed out in the first round at Wimbledon after being drawn against eventual finalist Roger Federer.

Djokovic still on top

Novak Djokovic’s successful defence of his Wimbledon crown ensured that the Serb remained at world number one. The 32-year-old collected his fifth Wimbledon title and 16th slam just over a week ago with a thrilling five-set win over Federer. The match lasted three minutes short of five hours.

Djokovic is now 4,500 points clear of second-ranked Rafa Nadal who is just 485 points ahead of 37-year-old Federer.

The biggest climber was Roberto Bautista Agut whose ride to the semi-finals, where he lost in four sets to Djokovic, saw him rise nine places to 13, equalling his best ranking.

Austria’s Dominic Thiem in fourth is the highest-ranked of the so-called next-gen players who continue to struggle to break the big three’s hold on the Grand Slams.
