Furthermore, it appears board member Philip Burns is threatening to file a criminal complaint against the SA Rugby Union (SARU) with the Hawks (Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation).

SARU placed the company board, as well as the WPRFU executive, under administration towards the end of 2021 and appointed former SARU CEO Riaan Oberholzer to administer the union’s affairs.

However, it appears Burns is of the belief that SARU’s efforts are not in the best interest of WP Rugby and has labelled them “a farce”.

In a letter to Oberholzer and Marais, as has been seen by the Rugby365 website, Burns states: “I am deeply concerned with the current administrative corporate governance practises more, particularly, with the current failings in the company law prerequisites that ought to apply to the company.

“The perception created – if one is to be intellectually honest – is one which places SARU at party to defraud the WPPR, inclusive of the WPRFU and its underlying clubs and administration entities.

“With the above in mind, I am duty-bound and legally obligated to register a formal criminal complaint with South African Police Services – Serious Commercial Crimes Directorate – documenting the numerous alleged indiscretions in this saga.”

Following receipt on that abovementioned letter, Marais responded as WP Rugby president – a position he no longer holds!

Zelt Marais appeared to be responding on behalf of Riaan Oberholzer

Furthermore, he appeared to respond on behalf of Oberholzer when he started his response with “We”.

“We acknowledge the letter and concerns raised. Currently, the Executive of WPRFU, together with the Administrator, is addressing these issues directly with SARU.

“The current ruling made by SARU is problematic and is not addressing the issues and concerns.

“Please be aware we are taking all necessary steps to ensure that the current status of WPRFU will be revised to ensure that WPRFU could move forward and include all stakeholders in rectifying current and past issues.”
