WATCH: Wallabies stars take pot-shots at referee

Two Wallabies rugby players have been caught in a rather tasteless video that saw them ‘taking revenge’ on referee Mathieu Raynal.

To recap, during last year’s Rugby Championship, the Wallabies looked set to clinch a dramatic win over the All Blacks as they won a penalty late in the game while leading 37-34.

However, French referee Mathieu Raynal then made an almost unbelievable decision to penalise Australia flyhalf Bernard Foley for time-wasting, handing the All Blacks a scrum, from which they scored the match-winning try.

The controversial moment drew a widespread backlash, although Raynal resolutely insisted he had made the correct decision.

In a rather odd video that has now emerged, Wallabies internationals Nic White and Ned Hanigan made an appearance at the Australian Open tennis tournament over the weekend, where they were tasked with what was meant to be a light-hearted game.

The pair of players were tasked with smashing tennis balls and a moving image of Raynal as they were encouraged to take their ‘revenge’ on the referee.

The Wallabies’ Twitter account joked: ‘Stick to footy fellas’, but many other responses suggested it was in bad taste. The video has since been deleted.

The Wallabies were upset over the incident

There had been a mixed and widespread reaction to the decision, and Foley himself insisted he couldn’t understand Raynal’s decision at the time.

“I wasn’t trying to slow it down, but I was just trying to get really clear and concise about what we were trying to do at that next line-out,” Foley told The Sydney Morning Herald.

“At the end it was very loud in the stadium, but there was no sense there was going to be a call like that.”
