Ospreys hooker Ifan Phillips has revealed he needed his leg amputated after a motorbike accident earlier in December.

Phillips is hoping to get a prosthetic leg after he sustained the life-changing injuries in a crash involving two motorbikes.

The 25-year-old – the son of former Wales hooker Kevin – collided with another motorbike in Swansea on 5 December.

Appeal looking to raise R2.1 million for Ifan Phillips

Ifan Phillips has launched a crowd-funding appeal to support him and his family during his recovery, so far raising over £61 000 (R1.28 million) with a target of £100 000 (R2.1 million).

“I went into theatre on arrival, but following ongoing surgery it was not possible to save my leg. As a result I had to have an above the knee amputation,” Phillips said.

“Your kind donations will all be going towards my rehabilitation and hopefully getting a prosthetic leg, which will enable me to experience new opportunities.

“Those who know me well will know how active I am as an individual and I will continue to be so.

“All your donations are greatly appreciated so thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

A Wales Under-20 international, Phillips made 40 appearances for the Ospreys after making his debut in 2017.
