NWU Eagles fullback Tino Swanepoel scored what could be a try-of-the-season contender in the first half of their Varsity Cup match against Tuks in Pretoria on Monday night.

The Eagles and Tuks were locked in a tight tussle in round four in Pretoria, but ultimately the visitors managed to hold on for a crucial 26-22 away win, which lifted them back to the top of the Varsity Cup standings.

This particular result was also the lowest scoring game in round four, with Maties edging Wits 56-54, while CUT demolished UJ 54-12 and UCT Ikeys thumping Shimlas 27-12.

With his team trailing by eight agains Tuks after 16 minutes of action, Swanepoel launched a lethal attack from the back and went all the way to score.

Taking the ball inside his own half, the fullback put his head down and ran a straight line to breach the Tuks defence. He did lose his footing, but had the presence of mind to shift his weight on his hands in order to keep his knees from touching the ground.

Without breaking his speed, Swanepoel then regained his balance and forged ahead before effortlessly stepping around his opposite number, who was Tuks’ last line of defence, to touch down in the corner.
