Paul de Wet scored a dramatic late try as the Stormers held off a Bulls fightback to claim a 30-26 win in Pretoria.

Jake White’s men were caught off guard as their visitors made a strong start, with Seabelo Senatla touching down twice from a pair of Manie Libbok grubber kicks.

However, Johan Grobbelaar went over in the final act of the first half, and Madosh Tambwe and Embrose Papier crossed after the break to swing the match in the hosts’ favour.

Elrigh Louw and Herschel Jantjies then exchanged tries, but De Wet’s intervention four minutes from time proved decisive.

The Stormers were aided by 10 points from the boot of Libbok, while Morne Steyn kicked four points for the Bulls and Chris Smith scored one conversion.

Senatla pounced on a well-judged Libbok grubber for an early try as the Stormers started strongly and, although Libbok failed to convert, the fly-half followed up with a pair of penalties to open up an 11-0 lead.

The Stormers then produced another score from the same playbook, with Libbok feeding Senatla with a perfectly executed grubber to send the winger somersaulting over the try line.

Libbok added the extras on this occasion, but the Bulls finally got on the scoresheet in the closing seconds of the first half after Ernst van Rhyn was sin-binned for an accumulation of Stormers offences.

Grobbelaar went over from a driving maul, with Smith’s conversion reducing the deficit to 18-7 at the break.

White introduced Steyn, Marcell Coetzee and Lizo Gqoboka at half-time in a bid to make further inroads, while Libbok missed with a long-range attempt to kick the first points of the second period.

The Bulls punished that wasted opportunity when Tambwe carved a route through the Stormers defence to leave Steyn with a straightforward kick to make it 18-14.

Steyn’s quick tap and cross-field kick led to Papier going over to put the Bulls in front for the first time five minutes short of the hour.

The fly-half added the conversion and there was daylight between the sides when Louw found a way through to make it 26-18.

Jantjies closed the gap to 26-23 three minutes later and the Stormers were further boosted when Tambwe saw yellow.

The Bulls turned down an easy three points in front of the posts but were not rewarded for their bold decision-making, with De Wet going over at the other end and Libbok rounding off the scoring.
