The incident in question took place during the Biarritz v La Rochelle match at the Parc des Sports Aguilera.

With the score at 24-20 in La Rochelle’s favour, Biarritz had an attacking lineout as the clock ticked into extra-time.

What followed simply has to be seen to be believed!

As the ball was thrown in at the lineout, a second ball appeared out the crowd.

Mayhem broke loose as La Rochelle’s New Zealand scrumhalf Tawera Kerr-Barlow kicks the one ball into touch – thinking he’d won the match for his team – while Biarritz’s hooker Francois Da Ros crashes over the tryline thinking he’d scoring the winning try for his team!

The referee ruled out the try, but Biarritz fairly – or unfairly? – went on to win the match 27-24 after scoring a legitimate try by Samoan international Josh Tyrell from a five-metre scrum the referee had awarded as a result of baffling previous play.

Rugby can be happy ‘certain’ referees weren’t involved!

We can only wonder what would’ve happened if ‘certain’ referees and TMO’s – no names mentioned – had they been in charge!

The win saw Biarritz moved off the bottom of the Top 14 log into 13th place, condemning once mighty Toulon to the wooden spoon position.

La Rochelle are in seventh place.
