You’ll remember that tongue-out celebration.

Bob Skinstad lit up pitches for the Springboks, Stormers and others with his flamboyant personality and all-out playing style. Where is he now?

Skinstad career recap for the Springboks

Now 47, Skinstad was born in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe and educated at Hilton College in KwaZulu-Natal. He studied at the University of Stellenbosch where he captained the first side. During his career in South Africa, he represented the Stormers, Cats and Sharks. Skinstad was widely known as one of the first ‘impact’ players because of his ability to affect matches off the bench with directness, pace and physicality. Skinstad won three Currie Cups with Western Province in 1997, 2000 and 2001, and also clinched a Tri-Nations title with the Springboks in 1998. He’s also got a World Cup winner’s medal, although he wasn’t a key playing member of the squad in 2007. He won 42 caps in total for the Springboks.

Skinstad was known for his speed off the mark, superb handling skills, flair and anticipation. He was also one of the ‘pin-up’ boys of his generation as a good-looking, fresh-faced youngster. His effectiveness on the bench, as well as his versatility, made him a critical squad member throughout his tenure for the Boks. However, injuries also dampened and curtailed long spells of his playing career.

You might also recall when Skinstad flamboyantly (maybe unnecessarily) dived for the try line and hurt himself, breaking some ribs. That was just the type of player he was, and sometimes that approach attracted unwanted attention in the media.

Where is Bobby Skinstad now?

Skinstad had four children with his wife Debbie Wolff who he married twenty years ago in 2004.

“Bobby Skinstad was the co-founder of the Cape Town Tens Rugby Festival and the famous Toad Restaurants. He now lives with his family in London and immerses himself in the world of technology investment.”

That’s according to his Rugby365 players page. He also joined the consulting firm Elizirr in July 2023.
