ICYMI – Bok barometer: TWO players who deserve debuts

These two players have certainly put their hands up for Springboks selection. They could be given a golden chance to impress Jacques Nienaber just before the Rugby World Cup.

MUST READSPRINGBOKS: NINE PLAYERS AT RISK OF MISSING RUGBY WORLD CUP

The Rugby World Cup is around the corner with just over three months to go before the Springboks title defence in France.

Meaning, there is still time for some stars to make a last ditch effort at making Jacques Nienaber’s squad. In fact, with the Stormers hosting a second successive URC final, there are players who have certainly put their hands up for selection.

TWO PLAYERS WHO DESERVE BOK CALL-UPS

Hacjivah Dayimani and Dan du Plessis have been nothing short of brilliant for the Stormers.

Not just this season but last year as well. Furthermore, both me have played an instrumental role in the Cape-based outfits recent success – their URC triumph last season and another home final (with a likely second URC title coming to Cape Town). So, let’s take a look at the numbers representing their scintillating form…

Since joining the Stormers from the Lions, Dayimani has seemingly rejuvenated his rugby career. With the pace of a backline player, Dayimani has showcased his skillset in fine style all season. He made 16 line breaks this season – the sixth highest of any player in the URC and he is a forward.

The Stormers flanker has made a staggering 599m all season to go with his three tries and five try assists. His ability to attack the space and keep the ball alive is truly remarkable and his 20 offloads this season prove my point.

Du Plessis has been at the forefront of most of the Stormers brilliant tries this season. He reminds me of a young Jean de Villiers with the manner in which he breaks apart opposition defenses with such ease.

Also, his 15 line breaks this season are the 8th highest in the URC. However, he is as good at starting attacks as he is at continuing them. The gifted Stormers inside centre has produced 22 offloads – the 4th highest of any player this season. He has consistently been one of the top players at the Stormers for several seasons now.

SPRINGBOKS DEPTH A DOWNFALL FOR TALENTED STARS

Bok rugby has such strong depth that even top URC players will miss out on the Rugby World Cup.

However, these two players surely deserve a call-up to one of Nienaber’s training camps. Furthermore, Nienaber might be tempted to reward them with a few minutes in the Rugby Championship.

It must be noted that both players are unlikely to make the RWC squad. This is because the Springboks have world class players in both positions. With flankers such as Kwagga Smith, Pieter-Steph du Toit, Deon Fourie and Marco van Staden all selected and ready to step up for injured Bok skipper, Siya Kolisi.

Moreover, at inside centre they have Damian de Allende (arguably one of the worlds best inside centres) and back-up in Damian Willemse and Andre Esterhuizen.
