Springboks to join Six Nations? One former England coach is NOT happy!

Will they or won’t they? That is the million dollar question as news emerged that the Springboks will be replacing Italy in the Six Nations.

Will they or won’t they? That is the million dollar question as news emerged that the Springboks will be replacing Italy in the Six Nations.

But the reaction has not all been positive.

Former England coach Sir Clive Woodward was very vocal about his feelings around the idea to make South Africa part of the Six Nations.

And while nothing has been set in stone yet, Woodward used his column in the Daily Mail to lambast the idea as “random” and “brainless”.

“It would leave Italy – and other aspiring European nations – banished to the wilderness. Who will be benefiting from such a radical change to the Six Nations? Unions or investors; individuals, executives or the grassroots game?” he asked.

And while Woodward agreed that the Six Nations needs a facelift, he felt strongly that the decision should be focused on developing rugby in Europe, not just bringing in more money.

“I totally accept that the Six Nations could do with some tweaks but there are infinitely better options [than adding the Boks to the tournament].

“The Six Nations need to open their eyes and not be blindsided by the alleged promises of extra revenue.

“CVC Capital Partners have become involved in the sport for one reason: to make money – for them, not the rugby community.”

He went on to say that a promotion/relegation playoff fixture can be the way to go in terms of helping teams like Georgia test themselves at a higher level.

“In recent years they have disastrously stalled Georgian rugby,” Woodward wrote.

“The Lelos have been left with nowhere to go and no way of bettering themselves.

“They have been in limbo for years when they should be in the fast lane. I can see the Georgians running out of steam unless we give them hope.”

If the Springboks do join the Six Nations it won’t be for some years

Woodward added that rugby needs to stop “prostrating itself in front of the money men and put the game first.”

But while nothing has been finalised in terms of the Springboks joining the Six Nations, South Africa, New Zealand, Australia and Argentina have all committed to continue to do battle in the Rugby Championship until at least 2025.
