Ahead of their end-of-year tour of the United Kingdom, Springbok coach Jacques Nienaber assured all and sundry that Rassie Erasmus would NOT be continuing with his controversial ‘water boy’ role.

During this year’s British & Irish Lions series, Erasmus was one the Springboks’ water carriers during matches, relaying messages to the players on the field.

“In the Test games against the British & Irish Lions, World Rugby came out and made a third water carrier spot available,” Nienaber said.

“It was a role we fulfilled internally and gave Rassie the opportunity.

“We’re now back to two water carriers so there’s no space for him. He will be in the (coaches’) box with us at the top,” Nienaber added.

While Rassie Erasmus was in the coaches’ box for the first Test on tour against Wales, he once again donned his ‘water boy’ bib and was spotted barking orders at the Springboks from down on the field in their clash against Scotland at Murrayfield on Saturday.

Social media was quick to blow up, questioning why he was once again allowed to perform the role.
