Springbok loose forward Deon Fourie endured an unfortunate season-ending injury during the URC. Will he have to retire?

Springbok loose flanker Deon Fourie was stretchered off during the Stormers Champions Cup defeat to La Rochelle back in April. Unfortunately, head coach John Dobson confirmed that the injury was serious. Thus, ruling the dynamic Bok forward out for the rest of the season.

So, was he referring to the 2024 rugby season or just the URC? Let’s divulge more deeply into the future of Fourie.

Unfortunately, Deon Fourie suffered an ACL injury.

While Dobson was hopeful post-match that Fourie had avoided an ACL injury, the worst has been confirmed, with the 37-year-old now set for a six-month spell on the sidelines after undergoing surgery on Wednesday.

Therefore, he will be out of action until October. Thus ruling him out of the Springboks-Ireland series and Rugby Championship. Furthermore, at the age of 37, there were already question marks over his possible retirement. He played 78 minutes in the Rugby World Cup final. In fact, he finished the RWC final as captain. Therefore, retiring with a medal and the perfect ending would make sense?

However, Fourie does not plan to retire through injury.

Despite a torn ACL. Despite being 37. Ultimately, the heart and passion of Fourie is to pick to lie down. Recently, Dobson stated that he will not retire like this. Not Deon Fourie.

“This is not how Deon Fourie’s career will end,” director of rugby Dobson stated on SARugbyMag.

Therefore, as things stand, he is striving to return to the Springboks set up in time for the end of year tour. Meanwhile, 20+ Springbok Rugby World Cup-winners have been ruled out. Captain Siya Kolisi and vice-captain Handre Pollard as well as Fourie are unavailable. Meaning, one of these men will be appointed as the new Springboks captain.
