French ProD2 side Agen have officially announced that they have signed Springboks flyhalf Elton Jantjies until 2024.

Jantjies has been plying his trade in Japan for Urayasu D-Rocks, but the club is allegedly set to terminate his contract in December.

Jantjies’ next destination has now been confirmed as France, where he will play for Agen in the ProD2 in the French second division.

Commenting on Agen’s headline acquisition, club president Jean-François Fonteneau:

“Very happy to welcome Elton Jantjies [for] this season and for 23/24. [He brings] high quality support and experience for our young players. Can’t wait to see him wear the colours of Agen.”

The club’s official Twitter page also shared a welcoming note to the 32-year-old Jantjies.

The scandal and Jantjies’ Springboks career

He has is currently embroiled in a cheating scandal that has rocked the Springboks, following a shocking expose of an illicit affair between him and Springboks’ team dietician Zeenat Simjee.

Somewhat of a stalwart in the Springboks fold in recent years, Jantjies was omitted from the Test squad for the 2022 end-of-year tour of Europe, which is currently underway.

As the Springboks embarked on the four-Tests excursion, Jantjies reportedly booked into an expensive rehabilitation clinic in Hout Bay, Cape Town.

He has since been released and flew to Turkey, where he joined his wife, Iva Ristic and their three sons Junior, Noah, and Leandro Lee, in a last-ditch attempt to save his crumbling marriage.

While Jantjies is confident of reviving his Test career, several other flyhalf talents has set the local franchise rugby scene alight with the hope of becoming Jantjies’ permanent replacement in the Springboks squad.

Stormers No 10 Manie Libbok was selected part of the Springboks touring party and went on to make his Test debut in the loss against France. The 25-year-old has since earned a second cap when he came on as substitute in the Springboks’ victory against Italy on Saturday.

Other youngsters in the flyhalf pecking order are Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu and Jordan Hendrikse, from the Stormers and Lions respectively.
