Springbok centre Lukhanyo Am has undergone knee surgery after leaving the national team’s camp in Australia, as reported by The South African website.

Am was earlier ruled out of Saturday’s Rugby Championship clash against Australia in Sydney.

The 28-year-old, who has been in superb form of late, suffered the knee injury against the Wallabies in Adelaide last weekend, which prompted the decision to send him back to his provincial side, the Sharks, for further medical advice.

It’s unclear how long Lukhanyo Am will be sidelined, but he’s almost certain to miss the final two away and home matches in the Rugby Championship against Argentina.

He will also face a race against time to be fit for selection for the Springboks’ end of year tour to Europe.
