Relive the moment when Frans Steyn executed a monster penalty kick for the Springboks in their pool game against Samoa at the 2011 Rugby World Cup.

Steyn’s remarkable quest to head to a fourth World Cup has suffered a setback with news that his 2023 RWC campaign is serious jeopardy due to a knee injury.

The 36-year-old Steyn picked up a serious knee injury while on duty for the Cheetahs earlier this year and is currently the post-surgery rehabilitation phase of his recovery having had to undergo corrective surgery.

With all the speculation and negativity going around, we take a look at one of the more memorable moments he produced for the Springboks at a World Cup.

At the 2011 World Cup, the Springboks came up against Samoa. With his team’s struggle to seize control of the contest, Steyn lined up an attempt at goal when they won a penalty inside their own half.

He didn’t hesitate despite it being an angled, 63m long range effort. Watch the video below to see how effortlessly he knocked over what many believe to be the longest penalty in RWC history.

In 2020, World Rugby confirmed that this monstrous penalty by Steyn was measured as the longest successful kick at any Rugby World Cup.

Another one of Steyn’s penalties, the one against Fiji at the same World Cup against, has been ranked as the second longest kick in the tournament’s history.
