But it wasn’t an afternoon to celebrate.

Handre Pollard, who missed the first Test in Pretoria, took over from Elton Jantjies in the No 10 jersey and Siya Kolisi as captain.

But, despite kicking all 12 of his side’s points through four penalties, the Springboks suffered a shock – and historic – 13-12 loss to their Welsh visitors.

Handre Pollard is moving from France to England next season

It was the first time in history that the Springboks had lost at home to Wales in what was the 12th Test on South African soil.

Pollard, who will leave his French club Montpellier next season in order to join English side Leicester Tigers, is expected to relinquish the captain’s armband for the third and deciding Test at the Cape Town Stadium on Saturday, 16 July with Kolisi returning to the role.

Kick-off is scheduled for 17:05.
