World Rugby celebrates Kenya Independence Day

World Rugby has wished Kenyans a happy Independence Day with this brilliant compilation video of the country’s sevens rugby team and their fans.

Kenya became an independent country in 1963 and was admitted into the Commonwealth as a republic, or ‘Jamhuri’ (Swahili for ‘republic’) exactly one year later in 1964. And as a result, 12 December is referred to as Jamhuri Day.

Kenya gained independence from the British on 12th of December 1963 after being under sovereign rule since the late 19th century.

According to Britannica, Kenya officially became a British colony in 1920 and African demands for more involvement in political processes were denied until 1944, when an African was included in the legislature.

World Rugby celebrates Kenya’s independence:

Kenya are one of the 15 core teams on the World Rugby Sevens Series circuit and in honour of the country’s independence on this day, the official World Rugby 7s Twitter account shared this awesome video compilation featuring the Kenya sevens side and their joyous supporters.

The World Rugby Sevens Series is currently underway, with three tournaments — Hong Kong, Dubai and Cape Town — having been played already. After three events, Kenya are 14th on the Sevens Series in standings with nine log points.

There are still nine legs of the Series to be completed this season, in Hamilton, Sydney, Los Angeles, Vancouver, Hong Kong again, Singapore, Toulouse and London.

GOOGLE’S DOODLE CELEBRATES 59 YEARS OF KENYAN INDEPENDENCE:

Today’s Google Doodle also celebrated Jamhuri Day by depicting the Kenyan flag, which commemorates the freedom fighters who sacrificed and liberated the country from British colonialists.

“Doodles provide a way for Google to connect with its users by helping them celebrate important moments and national days,” says Sharon Machira, Communications and Public Affairs Manager, Google Kenya.
