Van Wyk show steers Blitzboks into Cape Town Sevens quarters

Shilton van Wyk bags brace as Blitzboks power past France 26-7 in final Pool A game to advance to Cup quarter-finals of Cape Town Sevens.

Shilton van Wyk bagged a brace of tries as the Blitzboks powered past France 26-7 in their final Pool A to book their place in the Cup quarter-finals of the Cape Town Sevens.

With the curtain falling on the Pool stage of the tournament, the Blitzboks overpowered France to make it a perfect three wins from three games, thus advancing to the knockouts at the top of the Pool A standings.

The Blitzboks will now face Great Britain in the last year. Apart from it being an elimination match, the games takes on even greater significance when taking into account that Great Britain is the only team to have beaten them at the Dubai Sevens last week.

Initially France made all the attacking plays, but the Blitzboks defence stood resolute under pressure. Muller du Plessis then raised the roof when he simply injected pace into the Blitzboks attack and sped through a gap to score the opening try.

But their joy and that of the raucous crowd was short-lived as France answered with a try of their own to draw level on the scoreboard.

But Davlon Blood responded with a well-taken try in the corner to put the South Africans 12-7 to the good at the break.

It was one-way traffic in the second stanza as Blitzboks forwards laid the French to waste up front, laying the perfect foundation for the backs to flourish.

Van Wyk pulled off what has now become his signature move when he hacked the ball forward and outpaced the French defence to collect the ball and score.

And he was at it again, this time successfully chasing down teammate Darren Adonis’ grubber kick to round off the scoring and the pool stage for the Blitzboks.
