A South African leg of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series has been included in every edition of the competition since it began back in the 1999/00 season.

The tournament was first held in Stellenbosch in 1999 before being moved to Durban for the next two seasons.

For nine seasons – from 2002 until 2010 – it was held in George, before moving to then Port Elizabeth between 2011 and 2014.

It moved to its current ‘home’, the Cape Town Stadium in Cape Town, in 2015.

World Series tournaments planned for Cape Town were cancelled in 2020  and 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The 22nd edition will be held from 9-11 November 2022.

New Zealand have won 11 of the 21 tournaments to date with South Africa and Fiji tasting victory four times apiece.

England have been the only other winners in Mzansi on two occasions.
