Having picked up a somewhat fortuitous 19-all draw in their opening Pool B match against France, the Blitzboks beat Japan 40-12 in their second clash.

However, they went down 12-0 to Argentina in their final pool clash to finish third in the group.

That meant a ninth place quarter-final against Kenya, but despite a Siviwe Soyizwapi brace and a half-time lead, Kenya scored three times in the second half to clinch a 17-12 win.

The Blitzboks will now contest the 13th-16th place playoffs against hosts Canada at 19:22 (SA time) on Sunday.

Meanwhile, in the Cup quarter-finals there were plenty of shock results.

France beat Great Britain 15-7 while Australia shocked series leaders New Zealand 17-7.

Argentina continued their impressive form with a 19-14 win over Fiji while Ireland booked the final semi-final spot with a 15-10 win over the USA.
