Blitzboks: Selvyn Davids’ feisty grapple vs Wales in Canada Sevens [video]

Selvyn Davids inspired some banter from the official World Rugby Sevens account after getting acquainted with the Welsh defence in Canada.

The Blitzboks bounced back from their disappointing weekend in Las Vegas to finish unbeaten in their pool in the Canada Sevens.

They’ll now face Argentina in the quarterfinal on Sunday night and play either Fiji or New Zealand in the semis.

It was quite a day over in Vancouver, with Spain making history by beating New Zealand for the first time.

The South Africans, though, seemingly rid themselves of whatever cobwebs entangled them over in America and returned to their dazzling ways across the border.

One man, Selvyn Davis, was particularly impressive. Davids leads the points-scoring table in Canada with 31, ahead of Fiji’s Terio Veilawa on 29 and has notched up three tires on this leg of the World Series Sevens.

But tallest trees catch the most wind. Or, perhaps in Davis’ case, the shortest trees get carried around. The 24-year old is one of the shorter players on the circuit, just under 1.7m. And while that’s very useful for fetching and generally being feisty, it really annoys the opposition…especially when he refuses to let go of the ball.

The solution? Pick him up and carry him around, just like Wales did over in Canada. Davids had just received a high ball and wanted to wriggle his way through a red wall. Admirable, but unlikely. With the Welsh defence circling him, he thought he’d try and wriggle his way out, but couldn’t get free.

The official Sevens account enjoyed it so much that they even brought the jokes.

And then there was this one time Fiji got hold of him, too.

Shame, man. Sure, it’s something happens from time to time in Sevens, but we’re gonna notice when it’s one of our own caught in the thick of it.

And hey, he did this in that same game, so swings and roundabouts, right?
