A poor start by the Cheetahs proved costly as they slumped to a 45-26 defeat against the Scarlets in round two of the European Challenge Cup on Saturday.

It was Cheetahs who were the first to get up and running, when Munier Hartzenberg scored their first try inside three minutes. However, things then went awry for them as they conceded five converted tries and a penalty to go into the half-time break trailing 38-7.

The Scarlets eventually scored six tries, all converted by fyhalf Sam Costelow to add to his first half penalty goal, while the Cheetahs would add three more tries to their tally, coupled with veteran scrumhalf Ruan Pienaar slotting three conversions.

All three of those tries came in the last quarter of the match, however, points they conceded in the first half inflicted too much damage at the end, although they finished the game strongly.
