The five South African franchises all qualified for playoffs of the European cup competitions, with the Lions, Sharks and Stormers set to play at home and the Bulls and Cheetahs away.

In what should a considered a remarkable achievement for South African rugby as a whole, all five local teams have advanced to the round of 16 in the Champions Cup and Challenge Cup, respectively, in their first-ever season in the premier European competitions.

While the venues for these playoffs have all been determined, the dates — set to be at the end of March and/or early April — and kickoff times still need to be finalised.

Champions Cup:

In the Champions Cup, the Sharks and Bulls were grouped in Pool A and both made it to the playoffs.

The Sharks lost 39-29 to Harlequins in London in their final pool game on this past weekend, but manage to secure a crucial bonus point from that game, which help them seal a home playoff game against Munster.

The Bulls lost 31-7 to Lyon in France, resulting in them having to anxiously depend on other results to go their way. In the end, it all worked out as the men from Pretoria snuck into the knockout stage, where they will come up against Toulouse.

The Stormers were too good for Clermont and cruised to a 30-16 victory at the Cape Town Stadium. The win saw them finish third in Pool B, allowing them to host a playoff showdown with Irish side Munster.

Challenge Cup:

SA teams, the Lions and Cheetahs were both in Pool B of the Challenge Cup and both made it into the last 16, albeit by the skin of their teeth.

The Lions survived a late onslaught to take down the Dragons 30-25 in Wales and book their spot in the last 16. They will host French giants Racing 92 at Ellis Park.

Despite the odds stacked heavily against them, the Cheetahs progressed to the round of 16 courtesy of a dramatic late 9-6 win against Pau, who were eliminated because of the loss.
