His effort helped the Yokohama Canon Eagles head into the half-time break 17-15 ahead, but the Eagles would eventually lose the match 51-20 against the Saitama Wild Knights.

Other internationals in the clash included Australia’s Marika Koroibete – who scored a hat-trick – and South Africa’s Damian de Allende.

Unfortunately, another Springbok, Jesse Kriel, did the Yokohama Canon Eagles no favours when he was red carded in the second half.

De Beer still holds the World Cup record for drop goals in a single match heading into this year’s tournament in France.

Jannie de Beer sets the record for most drop goals in a match.
