Pieter-Steph du Toit’s mega-move to Munster blocked

Rugby World Cup-winning Springbok Pieter-Steph du Toit’s move to Munster was reportedly blocked by the Irish Rugby Football Union.

Rugby World Cup-winning Springbok Pieter-Steph du Toit’s move to Munster was reportedly blocked by the Irish Rugby Football Union (IRFU).

Reports out of Ireland suggest that the Stormers’ Du Toit had agreed to a lucrative deal with Munster, but the signing was vetoed by IRFU performance director David Nucifora.

Munster were looking to fill the void left by the shock retirement of another South African-born player, CJ Stander, earlier in the month.

Following the IRFU’s decision, Munster then identified a “cheaper” option in Jason Jenkins to fill Stander’s boots.

Pieter-Steph du Toit had reportedly agreed in principle to a one-year deal worth more than €600 000 (R10.5 million).

Although unconfirmed, Jenkins wouldn’t prove nearly as draining on the Munster coffers.

Fellow Springboks RG Snyman and Damian de Allende are already on Munster’s books.

Du Toit, 28, is now expected to sign for Japanese side Toyota Verblitz who currently have Michael Hooper, Kieran Read, and Willie le Roux in their squad, while former All Blacks boss Steve Hansen is their director of rugby.
