The Sharks earlier this month announced that their captain Lukhanyo Am had extended his contract with the KwaZulu-Natal union for a further three years, until 2025.

BIG URC PREVIEW: SHAKE-UP ON THE CARDS!

Conditions of the contract included an immediate two-month sabbatical for Am in Japan with the Kobe Steelers.

The 60-day stint ensures that Am will be back in time for the United Rugby Championship playoffs, should the Sharks progress to the knock-out stages.

This short-term release was afforded to Am based on his commitment to the team, both in the past and for the future.

Am has subsequently arrived in Japan, the country in which he played a key role in the Springboks winning the 2019 Rugby World Cup title.

Lukhanyo Am could make his debut this weekend

Am’s first match could come as soon as this Saturday at home against the Ricoh Black Rams.

If not, he may have to wait until Sunday, 20 March to make his debut away against Yamaha Jubilo.

In Am’s absence, Springbok World Cup-winning captain Siya Kolisi will take over the captaincy, starting with Friday, 11 March’s home URC match against the Scarlets at Hollywoodbets Kings Park.

Kick-off is scheduled for 19:10.

We’re not convinced the red of Kobe Steelers suits Am better than the black and white of the Sharks, but we bet the money is good!
