Japan have signalled their intent to bid for the 2035 Rugby World Cup in a move that could see the tournament staged in Asia for the second time.

The Japan Rugby Football Union chairperson Kensuke Iwabuchi has revealed that he has made World Rugby aware of their intent to put together a bid.

The 2019 tournament was well-received by all the teams who visited Japan with facilities and infrastructure at a world-class level.

Iwabuchi ambitiously declared that he wants Japan to be the No 1 rugby union team in the world when they next host the Rugby World Cup.

“We’ve informed World Rugby that we want to do it then at the earliest (2035), and we will move forward looking at when the conditions allow us to actually host it,” he said.

After France host the men’s Rugby World Cup in 2023, the 2025 Women’s Rugby World Cup will be staged in England.

However, in 2027 Australia will host the men’s tournament and in 2029 they will stage the equivalent women’s event.

World Rugby will then break new ground with the same tournaments heading to the United States in 2031 and 2033.

The stink of France 2023

South Africa narrowly missed out on winning the rights to host the 2023 Rugby World Cup in a controversial bidding process which has also been part of wider investigation into corruption in French rugby.

France 2023 takes place under a cloud of suspicion and the tournament could well bring the entire game into disrepute.

SA Rugby has not made public any desire to bid for the next available World Cup in 2035.
