Jake White lures Montpellier’s Jacques du Plessis to Loftus Versfeld

French side Montpellier has confirmed that an agreement has been reached to release loose forward Jacques du Plessis at the end of the season.

French Top 14 giants Montpellier have confirmed that an agreement has been reached to release loose forward Jacques du Plessis at the end of the season.

Jacques du Plessis has been linked with a move to Jake White’s Bulls as he looks to return to South Africa to be closer to his family during the ongoing global Covid-19 pandemic.

Du Plessis’ contract was only due to end in June 2022.

The 27-year-old was born in Pongola and played 32 Currie Cup matches and 31 Super Rugby matches for the Bulls between 2013 and 2015 before signing for Montpellier.

The 2.01m (6-foot-7) Jacques du Plessis is equally at home on the flank as he is in the second row.

At the time of publishing, Du Plessis has made 101 appearances for Montpellier, scoring 11 tries.

The Bulls boast an impressive stock of loose forwards with Duane Vermeulen, Arno Botha, Nizaam Carr and Marcell Coetzee all on their books.

In addition, the Bulls are reportedly interested in the signing of Cheetahs flank Oupa Mohoje.

“The Covid-19 crisis has changed my way of seeing things, and my career in particular,” Jacques du Plessis said in a statement.

“I left my home in 2015, I had a great experience here in Montpellier, but I feel that today is the time for my family and I to return home. I thank President (Mohed) Altrad for his confidence and wish a bright future to this club which is somewhat mine,” Jacques du Plessis concluded.
