Is Willie le Roux the Stormers’ BIG signing?

The Stormers are still basking in the glory of being crowned inaugural URC winners after seeing off the Bulls in the final on Saturday.

John Dobson’s men edged a thrilling clash at the Cape Town Stadium 18-13.

Players leaving teams is common place these days – even when part of a winning culture.

We saw Argentina’s Pablo Matera play a key role in the Crusaders winning yet another Super Rugby title this past weekend, but he couldn’t be persuaded to re-sign for another season in Christchurch.

Similarly, Warrick Gelant played his last match – perhaps forever – for the Stormers on Saturday.

Gelant is set for a big-money move to French Top 14 side  Racing 92 – as reported by The South African website.

The Stormers moved quickly to fill the void at fullback, luring Clayton Blommetjies to the Cape.

However, word on the street is that Blommetjies is NOT the ‘big-name’ replacement who has signed on the dotted line ahead of next season.

Dobson confirmed on radio on Monday that the Stormers have indeed secured a key signing, but we will have to wait a while longer for the player’s identity to be officially revealed.

However, word is that that player could be none other than veteran Springbok fullback Willie le Roux.

Love him or hate him, Le Roux, who will turn 33 on 18 August, has played 70 Tests for the Springboks, 65 of those in the starting XV.

Le Roux was born in Stellenbosch and attended Paul Roos Gymnasium. He currently plays in Japan for Toyota Verblitz.

Key to his reported desire to return to the Cape is the fact that he and his partner, British chef Holly Claire Nicol, recently built their dream home at Val de Vie Estate in the Winelands.

If Le Roux is indeed the latest Stormers signing, remember where you first heard the news!
