Former Southern Spears boss eyeing top WP Rugby job – report

Former Southern Spears boss Tony McKeever is reported to be interested in the Western Province Rugby Union’s vacant CEO position.

Former Southern Spears (remember them?) boss Tony McKeever is reported to be interested in the Western Province Rugby Union’s vacant CEO position.

Tony McKeever, who formerly held a similar position at the Southern Spears before they became the Southern Kings, is now the driving force behind a partnership between French Top 14 giants Stade Francais and WP.

Tony McKeever has a history with Stade Francais’ billionaire owner Dr Hans-Peter Wild who he previously invited to Port Elizabeth to meet with EP Rugby President Andre Rademan back in 2018.

According to Netwerk24, Tony McKeever now has his sights on the WP Rugby CEO post.

The role has remained vacant since the departure of Paul Zacks over 12 months ago.

‘I’d love to put the Stormers on a trajectory with their move to Europe,’ McKeever admitted.

‘I previously helped with the negotiations for the Cheetahs and Kings’ inclusion in the PRO14.

‘At this level, there’s no room for anyone to learn the ropes while he is in the position. Without the necessary administration experience and knowledge of negotiating broadcast deals, you’ll get stuck,’ McKeever added.
