Earlier this week, Sale Sharks director of rugby Alex Sanderson confirmed that due to Premiership’s reduced £5 million salary cap set to come into effect, they were unlikely to hold on to several of their international stars, including De Klerk and fellow Springbok Lood de Jager.

Now it has emerged that De Klerk is likely heading to Japan to join the Red Hurricanes, who are coached by former Lions boss Johan Ackermann, who was instrumental in De Klerk’s arrival on the scene in 2014.

Sanderson also confirmed that De Klerk was entertaining a Japanese offer.

“Faf hasn’t left yet but the reality is that he could get offered £1 million from Japan and that is the nature of the game,” he said.

De Klerk joined Sale Sharks in 2017 and has made a major name for himself in England over the past five years.

Meanwhile, De Jager joined Sale Sharks in 2019 after the conclusion of that year’s Rugby World Cup.

It has not yet been confirmed where he is heading, but as reported by The South African website, he has been linked with a move back to South Africa to join the Stormers and Western Province.
