Assistant coach Mziwakhe Nkosi says the Lions are aiming to finish their Currie Cup campaign on a high note despite not having a realistic shot at making the playoffs.

The Lions were left to wondering what could’ve been in the wake of their agonising 29-21 loss to the Sharks last weekend, because the result all but eliminated them from playoff contention.

The Lions are currently sitting in seventh position in the Currie Cup standings, five log points behind the Bulls, who are in fourth spot which in the last semi-final place. And in order for the Lions to advance to the knockout stage, they’d need to smash the Griffons in their last regular season game with bonus-point win, while also relying on other results going their way.

LIONS KNOW THE CURRIE CUP DREAM IS OVER

While it is mathematically possible for the Lions to advance, it is a long shot, leading to Nkosi conceding to any hope of it happening.

“I’m gutted that we have not made the playoffs. Making the Currie Cup playoffs was a prerequisite for the franchise so I’m truly disappointed with the end result,” a distraught Nkosi said.

“We now have to aim for the highest possible finish outside the playoff spot, so that’s the motivation for us going into Friday’s match against the Griffons.

“As we near the end to our campaign, we are grateful to the guys who have put their bodies on the line for the better part of fourteen weeks but disappointed that we could not attain a play-off spot which for a franchise like ours is a prerequisite,” he added.
