The Lions have confirmed that Willem Alberts will likely miss the remainder of the Currie Cup season after sustaining a high-grade tear of his right hamstring muscle.

The Lions made a disappointing start to their Currie Cup campaign with a surprise 39-10 drubbing at the hands of the Pumas in Nelspruit last Friday.

The loss of Willem Alberts is sure to place further pressure on the Gauteng franchise as they look to bounce back and mount a solid challenge.

The Lions are due to take on Western Province in their next Currie Cup match at their Ellis Park home on Wednesday, 23 June.

Kick-off is at 19:00.

In addition, Alberts will miss the Lions’ clash against the visiting British & Irish Lions on Saturday, 3 July.

Alberts, 37, has played 43 Tests for the Springboks.
