CONFIRMED: Former Springbok coach to now work with Maties

Maties have confirmed that former Springboks assistant coach Matt Proudfoot will coach the team during the next Varsity Cup.

It was reported over the weekend that 50-year-old Proudfoot was set to join Maties after parting ways with the England RFU after three years following the sacking of head coach Eddie Jones

Proudfoot was one of Jones’ assistants.

Maties have made the appointment of Proudfoot, albeit in a ‘consultant head coach’ capacity.

Maties are five-time winners of the Varsity Cup, but have also lost in five finals, the most recent of which came in 2022 when they went down 29-23 to UK-Tuks.

Matt Proudfoot, who played four Tests as a prop for Scotland, was part of Rassie Erasmus’ backroom staff during the Springboks’ victorious 2019 Rugby World Cup campaign in Japan.
