Cape-based rugby coach, players killed in tragic accident

The Wellington rugby community has been rocked by the news of a tragic accident that claimed the lives of a coach and players.

According to Netwerk24, Albert Billings – a forwards coach for the Newton’s Rugby Club in Wellington – was on the way to a rugby match with his two sons (Peter and Albert Jnr.) and their cousin (Kean Alexander) when the tragic accident occurred.

They were preparing for a game against Hillcrest United Rugby Club when they were involved in a fatal crash involving two other vehicles.

Billings, Peter and Alexander were reported to have died at the scene, while Albert Jnr. later succumbed to his injuries in hospital.

“This is a very difficult time for us as a club. We struggle to accept this,” said Kenny Williams, chairman of the Newton Rugby Club.

The Rugby Club is tentatively planning a memorial service for Wednesday

According to police, the exact cause of the accident – which took place between Gouda and Hermon – is still being investigated.
