Du Plessis has been struggling with the injury for some time and White said during a virtual media briefing that it was best to have it fixed sooner rather than later as the 28-year-old second-rower is a big part of the Bulls’ plans in the coming years.

“It is something that just flares up every week,” White said.

White said it was decided it was better for Du Plessis to have it fixed surgically as he has had limited game time since rejoining the Pretoria franchise from French Top 14 giants Montpellier last year.

“We can’t go two weeks on, one week off, three weeks off, two weeks on.

“Looking at where we want to be in the next couple of years and having him as a player who can add value, we need to get the best out of him.

“He is not going to be available for a while.

“He has had this injury before. This is now the other foot, so we have to ensure he comes through nicely,” White added.

Jacques du Plessis played 60 times for the Bulls previously

Du Plessis played over 100 matches for Montpellier after donning the Bulls jersey 60 times between 2013 and 2015.
