The British & Irish Lions’ third tour match against the Bulls on Saturday at Loftus Versfeld is reportedly in doubt due to a spate of positive Covid-19 cases in the South African team’s camp.

The Bulls’ player buying spree is not over with the union reportedly hoping to sign one of the stars of Jake White’s 2007 Rugby World Cup-winning squad.

The British & Irish Lions’ third tour match against the Bulls on Saturday, 10 July at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria is reportedly in doubt due to a spate of positive Covid-19 cases in the South African team’s camp.

The visiting British & Irish Lions opening their eight-match tour with a comprehensive 56-14 drubbing of the Lions in Johannesburg and are due to play the Sharks in Johannesburg on Wednesday.

However, according to a report on the SuperSport website, “several” Bulls players tested positive for the coronavirus on Monday as the squad was due to enter a five-day bio-bubble ahead of the British & Irish Lions clash. 

The players who tested positive have been placed in isolation.

The latest news will do nothing to dampen the growing concern over the tour and those baffled as to why it’s going ahead as positive cases rise rapidly in the country with President Cyril Ramaphosa widely expected to extend the current two-week Level 4 lockdown.

In addition, on Monday SA Rugby confirmed that lock Lood de Jager had tested positive for the virus and the Springboks were forced to suspend training as a result. 

The Springboks delayed the scheduled announcement of their team to play Georgia in their second and final Test at Ellis Park on Friday, 9 July.
