Pieter-Steph Toit added the game’s biggest individual accolade to his Rugby World Cup-winners medal, following a stellar 2019.

The 27-year-old was crucial to the triumphant Springboks’ cause in Japan, and was rightly awarded with the World Rugby Player of the Year award the day after the conclusion of the competition.

Du Toit’s Rugby World Cup

Du Toit scored South Africa’s opening try in the tournament in what was a losing cause against the All Blacks.

Having been one of the standouts in that match, he continued with his tremendous form throughout the remainder of the tournament.

The Stormers flanker made an impressive 61 tackles in five matches in Japan, with an 85% success rate.

He was also quite potent with ball in hand, making a total of 27 carries, and the sight of him hurling his considerable frame over the gainline was one to behold.

Supersport compiled some of his finest moments of the tournament.

How Pieter-Steph du Toit stood out in 2019

He beat Bok teammate Cheslin Kolbe, Welsh captain Alun Wyn Jones, US hooker Joe Taufete’e ‘e as well as All Blacks flanker Ardie Savea, with whom he has shared many breakdown battles against.

He came out trumps in the end, adding to his 2018 SA Rugby Player of the Year award.

Prior to the awards ceremony, the official World Rugby website wrote of player;

“A linchpin in the South African pack, Du Toit has started eight of the Springboks’ 10 tests in 2019 and been an unused replacement in the RWC 2019 win over Canada. The towering 27-year-old may have flitted between second-row and flanker in the early days of his international career, but he has made the No.7 jersey his own over the last two years and his work-rate and versatility mean he is one of the first names down on Rassie Erasmus’ team sheet.”
