Bidvest Wits claimed only their third win of the season as they defeated Supersport United 2-0 at Bidvest Stadium on Wednesday. This was thanks to a first half blitz in which they showed the first glimpses of the form which saw them lift their first ever PSL title last season.

The home side made all the running early on as new signing Lehlohonolo Majoro pounced on a pin-point cross but his header was saved by Reeyad Pieterse while his effort after the rebound was denied by the post.

Their relentless work eventually paid off in the 16th minute as former Bafana captain Bongani Khumalo punished his former side’s poor defence from a corner by firing in a volley from close range.

Wits were not done as James Keene netted in from what looked like an impossible angle to bring up his first goal of the league campaign.

Such was the home side’s dominance, Khumalo – a central defender – found himself within inches of claiming his second goal, shooting straight into Pieterse after connecting with a cross from fellow centre back Thulani Hlatshwayo who had advanced well into the opposition half.

Wits maintained their dominance for much of the first half, looking the hungrier of the two sides.

The second 45 began with Supersport looking a little more in control of the game, grabbing their fair share of the possession but without troubling Wits keeper Darren Keet much. The “Clever Boys” on the other hand looked comfortable in their two goal lead as they opted to hang back and defend while the game petered out into a rather dour affair towards the end.

Both sides remain at the wrong end of the table with Eric Tinkler’s men unmoved at 12th place while the students jump one place to 15th ahead of Ajax Cape Town.
