Mamelodi Sundowns regained a four point lead at the top of the log as they handed Ajax Cape Town their third successive defeat, winning 2-1 at Cape Town Stadium on Tuesday night.

The visitors were on the attack early and asked questions off the home side defence with Themba Zwane and captain Hlompho Kekana threatening the goal as early as the third minute. This assault continued for much of the opening exchanges, with Ajax struggling to gain any sort of control of the game.

It took the Urban Warriors  13 minutes to surge forward with any type of intent when new signing Fargie Lakay forced Dennis Onyango into a save with a curling effort.

It would take another 13 minutes for Lakay to find himself in the thick of the action as, in the 26th minute, he showed strength that belies his small frame to fight off the attention of the Sundowns defence and slot one past a diving Onyango, opening the scoring.

In response, the log leaders immediately as Ajax keeper Keegan Peterson pulled off two saves in quick succession, one from a stinging long-range effort from Oupa Manyisa followed by a point-blank header from Sibusiso Vilakazi.

Sundowns’ relentless attack was soon rewarded when they were given a penalty in the 37th minute, resulting from a handball and Brazillian defender Nascimento duly slotted it in to level matters.

Vilakazi got the better of Peterson a minute later as he pounced on a low hanging cross from Percy Tau to put his side into the lead.

The second half started off in an equally frantic pace as the first as the home side went close to scoring early on but both sides would fade off as time went on, struggling to make any decisive inroads on either side.

The win gives the side from Pretoria much needed breathing space from second placed Cape Town City, while their opponents remain in dire need of a change of fortunes as they look rather set for their worst finish since the club’s inception.
