Nedbank Cup results

The weekend’s round of 32 fixtures in the Nedbank Cup finished without much incident as the sides expected to triumph came out victorious, sending the underdogs crashing out of the competition.

Polokwane City, who were stunned by first division strugglers Ubuntu Cape Town on Wednesday, remain the only top flight side to suffer an upset at this stage of the competition, while Bidvest Wits also crashed out, losing 1-0 to Cape Town City on the same night.

There was, however no action in one of the fixtures scheduled for Saturday as the contest at Goble Park between Super Eagles and neighbours Free State Stars had to be abandoned due to a waterlogged pitch.

Kaizer Chiefs 3-0 Golden Arrows

Kaizer Chiefs were largely untroubled as they defeated Golden Arrows 3-0 at a rather empty FNB Stadium on Sunday. Ryan Moon opened the scoring early in the second half for the home side, before substitute Bernard Parker doubled the lead nine minutes from the final whistle.

Defender Joseph Malongoane put the finishing touches to a convincing win, right at the final whistle as Amakhosi marched through.

Bloemfontein Celtic 1-1 Supersport United (Celtic won 5-4 on penalties)

Bloem Celtic are also through to the next round after defeating Supersport United 5-4 on penalties as the match finished 1-1 at extra time. Ndumiso Mabena opened the scoring for the hosts from the penalty spot in the first half before Sipho Mbule leveled matters in the 57th minute.

Orlando Pirates 2-0 Ajax Cape Town

Bernard Morrison scored twice to hand Orlando Pirates a 2-0 victory over Ajax Cape Town on Saturday as the Buccaneers avenged the league defeat suffered at the hands of their opponents in January.

This brought the Ghanaian’s goal tally for the season to three goals, all scored against the same opponent at the same venue.

Phiva Young Stars 0-2 Chippa United

Phiva Young Stars were easily brushed aside by Chippa United who came out 2-0 victors at Kabokweni Stadium on Saturday. Ayabulela Konqobe and Linda Mtoba netted to send the Chilli Boys through to the next round.

Swallows 1-3 Maritzburg United

Maritzburg United proved too much for Swallows when Belgian forward Andreas Fileccia scored a brace before Mxolisi Kunene put the result beyond doubt as the Team of Choice march on to the last 16.

Cape Town All Stars 0-1 Mamelodi Sundowns

Percy Tau was once again the hero as he provided the only goal of the match, helping Sundowns squeeze through against a rather spirited Cape Town All Stars at Athlone Stadium on Friday night.
